UCAS Personal Statement and References

To write a personal statement for UCAS, you first need to know about the restrictions and requirements for a UCAS personal statement.

Firstly, there is a maximum character limit (not word limit), including spaces, of 4,000 characters, and no more than 47 lines. If you failed to meet either of these conditions, you are unable to submit your personal statement to UCAS.

Second, you can only write ONE personal statement for a maximum of five universities of your choosing. Therefore, you should not write about specific contents that may favor one particular university. You can only have one person of your choosing as your referee to help you write your letter of recommendation. It is suggested for you to ask a teacher that knows you fairly well to help write your letter of recommendation. There is also the option of asking your head of school for your letter of recommendation, as long as he/she knows about you long enough well enough for him/her to write the letter of recommendation for you. If you go to the “references” page, you will need your reference’s title, full name, job title, school address, phone number and email address. Once you got your referee’s approval and filled in all necessary information, click “request references” and an email sent by UCAS will ask your referee for the letter of recommendation. Once your referee accepts or declines, you will receive an email notifying you that your referee has accepted or declined.
